Where this word comes from
Derived from French Océanie, from océan (“ocean”) + -ie (“place-name-forming suffix”). The French geographical name was introduced around 1812 by the Danish-French geographer Conrad Malte-Brun. French Océan (“ocean”) is ultimately from Latin ōceanus (“ocean”), from Ancient Greek ὠκεανός (ōkeanós, “ocean”). Compare Danish Oceanien, Swedish Oceanien, German Ozeanien, Dutch Oceanië and English Oceania.
