Meaning & usage
a neighborhood in Trondheim Trøndelag, Norway
Where this word comes from
From Othilie (“female given name”) + borg (“castle, fortress; place-name element”), with German-style genitive/linking -en-. The name comes from the farm Othilienborg gård, split off from Steindal nordre in 1847 and probably named after a female relative. The second element borg is from Old Norse borg (“fortress, castle”), from Proto-Germanic *burgz (“fortified settlement, stronghold”). Compare similarly formed Trondheim place names such as Charlottenlund and Rosenborg.
