Borrowed from German Polen (“Poland”), from Middle High German Polen or Polēnen. The German name belongs to the same word family as Pole (“Pole”), ultimately from Old Polish Polanie (“Poles; field dwellers”), from Proto-Slavic *poľane (“Poles; field dwellers”), the plural of *poľaninъ (“field dweller”), itself derived from *poľe (“field”). The latter has tentatively been connected with Proto-Indo-European *pleh₂- (“flat, wide”).
