Where this word comes from
Borrowed from Portuguese Portugal (“Portugal”). The Portuguese name continues Old Galician-Portuguese Portugal, from Late Latin Portucale, a univerbation of Portus Cale (“Port of Cale”), a Roman place-name associated with the area of present-day Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. The first element is portus (“harbour, port”), from Proto-Italic *portus, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *pértus (“crossing, passage”). The origin of Cale is uncertain, though a Celtic origin has been proposed. Cognates and parallel forms include Norwegian Nynorsk Portugal, Danish Portugal, Swedish Portugal, German Portugal, Dutch Portugal, French Portugal, Spanish Portugal, Galician Portugal and English Portugal.
