Meaning & usage

name/ˈruː.ɡaˌlan/
  1. a county of Norway, in southwestern Norway, with administrative centre in Stavanger.

Where this word comes from

Learned borrowing from Old Norse Rogaland, from the genitive plural of rygir (“the people living in Rogaland”) + land (“land, region”). The first element roga- is an older form than rygja-, as in Ryfylke. The county was formerly called Stavanger amt, but the name Rogaland was taken into use as the county name in 1919.
