The first element rose (“rose”) is ultimately from Latin rosa (“rose”), of uncertain deeper origin, often traced via Ancient Greek and Iranian to Proto-Indo-European *wr̥dʰos (“sweetbriar”). The second element borg is from Old Norse borg (“fortress, castle”), from Proto-Germanic *burgz (“fortified settlement, stronghold”). The Trondheim place name comes from the former farm Rosenborg, established when Bakke gård was divided in 1835. Abraham Bredahl Rosenvinge gave the property the name Rosenborg, derived from the family name Rosenvinge. The Copenhagen castle was named Rosenborg by Christian IV and interpreted as “Castle of Roses”. The football-club name is from the Trondheim neighborhood.
