Internationalism, based on Latin Sāturnus (“Saturn, the Roman god”), also attested in the older form Saeturnus. The Norwegian form reflects the widespread international form of the name without the Latin ending -us. The deeper origin of the Latin name is uncertain. Ancient Roman writers connected it with satus (“sown”), the past participle of serō (“to sow, plant”), in reference to Saturn's association with agriculture. This explanation is generally regarded as a folk etymology, however, since it does not readily account for the long vowel ā in Sāturnus or the older form Saeturnus. An alternative proposal ultimately derives the name from Etruscan, comparing it with the Etruscan divine name 𐌔𐌀𐌕𐌓𐌄 (satre, “Satre”); the exact relationship between the Latin and Etruscan names remains uncertain. The astronomical sense is transferred from the name of the Roman deity. Saturn was one of the five planets visible to the naked eye that were known in antiquity and received names associated with Greco-Roman gods. Parallel international forms include Danish Saturn, German Saturn, Dutch Saturnus, Swedish Saturnus, Icelandic Satúrnus, French Saturne and English Saturn.

Borrowed from English Saturn (“former American automobile marque”). The English brand name originated as the name of a General Motors project in 1982 and was retained when Saturn Corporation was formally established in 1985. The project was named after the Saturn V rocket, which had carried the Apollo missions to the Moon. The name was intended to evoke the technological ambition and success of the American space program at a time when General Motors was seeking to compete more effectively with Japanese automobile manufacturers. The rocket's name ultimately derives from the same astronomical name as Etymology 1. The Saturn rocket family had itself been named after the planet: it followed earlier American rocket systems called Jupiter, and Saturn is the next planet outward from Jupiter.
