Where this word comes from

Internationalism, ultimately from French Séchelles, the name given to the French possession in 1756 in honour of Jean Moreau de Séchelles, then France's Controller-General of Finances. The British later changed the spelling to Seychelles, which became the international form; Norwegian Seychellene adapts this name as a definite plural. The territorial name Séchelles in Jean Moreau de Séchelles's surname referred to the seigneurie of Séchelles at Cuvilly in Oise, France, which was acquired by the Moreau family in the early 18th century. The deeper etymology of the French place-name Séchelles is uncertain. Parallel adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Seychellane, Swedish Seychellerna, German Seychellen and English Seychelles.
