Meaning & usage
a constituent country of the United Kingdom.
Where this word comes from
Inherited from Old Norse Skotland, from Skota (“of the Scots”), the genitive plural of skotr (“Scot”), and land (“land, country”); literally “land of the Scots”. The ethnonym skotr has been compared with Old or Middle Irish scott (“Irishman”) and may be an early borrowing from it, though the connection is uncertain. The wider ethnonym is also represented by Late Latin Scotus (“Irishman, Gael”); its ultimate origin is unknown. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk Skottland, Swedish Skottland, Danish Skotland, Icelandic Skotland and Faroese Skotland (“Scotland”).
