Where this word comes from

Internationalism, ultimately based on Somali Soomaali (“Somali”), the ethnonym of the Somali people, with the international geographical ending -ia. The corresponding Somali country name is Soomaaliya (“Somalia”). The deeper origin of Soomaali is uncertain. A traditional explanation connects the ethnonym with Samaale, an ancestral figure in Somali genealogical tradition, but this is not securely established as its historical etymology. The geographical ending -ia ultimately continues Latin -ia, alongside Ancient Greek -ία (-ía) and -εια (-eia). Parallel international forms include Norwegian Nynorsk Somalia, Danish Somalia, Swedish Somalia, German Somalia, Italian Somalia, Latin Sōmālia and English Somalia.
