Where this word comes from
Internationalism, based on English Somaliland, formed from Somali + -land. The name was historically used in colonial names such as Britisk Somaliland, Fransk Somaliland and Italiensk Somaliland. The first element, English Somali, is from or akin to Somali Soomaali (“Somali”). Its deeper origin is uncertain. A traditional explanation connects the ethnonym with Samaale, an ancestral figure in Somali genealogical tradition, but this is not securely established as its historical etymology. English -land is from land, from Middle English Middle English lond (“land”), also land, from Old English Old English land (“land”), from Proto-West Germanic Proto-West Germanic *land (“land”), from Proto-Germanic Proto-Germanic *landą (“land”). A further connection with Proto-Indo-European *lendʰ- (“land, heath”) has been proposed, but the Indo-European origin of the Germanic word is disputed.
