Where this word comes from

Inherited from Old Norse Spanía (“Spain”), from Latin Spānia (“Spain”), a Late Latin and Medieval Latin apheretic form of Latin Hispānia (“Hispania; the Iberian Peninsula”). The origin of the Latin name is uncertain. It is traditionally derived from Phoenician, from a reconstructed Phoenician or Punic name *ʾī šapān, literally “island of the hyrax”. According to this interpretation, Phoenician speakers mistook the numerous rabbits of the Iberian Peninsula for hyraxes, and the name was understood as “island” or “land of rabbits”. This explanation was already known in antiquity and may be reflected in Roman coins depicting Hispania with rabbits. Cognates include Norwegian Nynorsk Spania, Faroese Spania, Icelandic Spánn, Danish Spanien, Swedish Spanien, German Spanien, Dutch Spanje, French Espagne, Spanish España, Portuguese Espanha, Italian Spagna and English Spain.
