An old Norwegian river name, usually connected with the reconstructed Germanic stems *swark- and *swork- (“to darken, become black”), related to svart (“black”); hence probably originally “the dark one”. A sound-symbolic origin, comparable to surkle (“to gurgle”), has also been proposed. Compare the related Norwegian river names Svarka, Sverka and Svorka. First attested in the Middle Ages indirectly in Surkudalr, the Old Norse name of Sørkedalen.
