Meaning & usage

name/ˈsʋar.ka/
  1. a river in Gjøvik municipality, Innlandet, Norway, flowing east from the lake Store Svarken into Vismunda below Kårstadsetra.

Where this word comes from

Ultimately unknown. Peter Andreas Munch connected the name with a reconstructed verb *svirka, corresponding to Proto-Germanic *swerkaną (“to darken, become obscured”), reflected in Old English sweorcan (“to become dark, be obscured”). If this explanation is correct, the river name would have meant approximately “the dark one”. Compare the Norwegian river names Surka, Svorka and Sverka, which Oluf Rygh assigns to the same stem.
