Where this word comes from
Derived from German Schweiz (“Switzerland”), from German Schwyz, the name of one of the three original cantons of the Old Swiss Confederacy. The place name is first attested as Medieval Latin in Suuites in a document dated 924, possibly written around 960. Its further origin is uncertain; proposals connect it either with a root meaning “to shine, shimmer”, possibly referring to a body of water, or with a root meaning “to singe, burn”, possibly referring to a clearing or land cleared by burning. Compare the parallel German-derived forms Danish Schweiz, Finnish Sveitsi, Latvian Šveice and Hungarian Svájc (“Switzerland”).
