An old Norwegian river name, usually connected with the reconstructed Germanic roots *swark- and *swork- (“to darken, become black”), related to svart (“black”); hence probably originally “the dark one”. A sound-symbolic origin, referring to the sound of flowing water, has also been proposed. Compare the related Norwegian river names Surka, Sørka, Svarka and Sverka. First attested in the 1432–1433 indirectly in the compound place name Surkomor, now Svorkmo.
