Where this word comes from
Internationalism, based on the name Tanzania, coined in 1964 as a blend of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, with -ia, combining the names of the two states that united that year. The Tanganyika element is ultimately from the name of Lake Tanganyika. The lake name is probably from Swahili changanyika (“to become mixed, be mixed together”), from changanya (“to mix”), ultimately from Proto-Bantu *-cànga. The name may originally have referred to the mixing of waters. A widespread alternative interpretation connects the name with Swahili tanga (“sail”) and nyika (“wilderness, uninhabited country”), yielding an interpretation such as “sail in the wilderness”, but this analysis is uncertain. The Zanzibar element is ultimately from Classical Persian Classical Persian زنگبار (“Zanzibar; literally “black-skinned coast””), formed from زنگی (“black-skinned”) and بار (“coast”). The Persian name was borrowed into Arabic as زَنْجِبار (zanjibār, “Zanzibar”). Parallel international adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Tanzania, Danish Tanzania, Swedish Tanzania, German Tansania, Dutch Tanzania and Swahili Tanzania (“Tanzania”).
