Internationalism, borrowed from Latin Tītān (“Titan”), from Ancient Greek Τῑτᾱ́ν (Tītā́n, “Titan”), the name of one of the Titans in Greek mythology. The deeper origin of the Ancient Greek name is uncertain; proposed explanations have connected it with τίτο (títo, “sun, day”), τιταίνω (titaínō, “to stretch, extend”) or τίσις (tísis, “retribution”). The moon was discovered by Christiaan Huygens in 1655. Its present name was proposed by John Herschel in 1847 as part of his naming scheme for Saturn's moons; Herschel chose Titan for Huygens's moon because of its exceptional size. Borrowed from English Titan, the name of an American family of missiles and launch vehicles, ultimately named after the titans of Greek mythology. The name was chosen in the United States in the mid-1950s for its associations with power, strength and invincibility.
