Where this word comes from
Internationalism, ultimately from the name of the town now known as Togoville, situated on the northern shore of Lake Togo. The name originally referred only to the town and was subsequently extended to the surrounding territory and, ultimately, the modern country. It is commonly analysed as Ewe to (“to pound”) + go (“shore”), literally “by the water”. During the German colonial period, the name was also used in Togoland, the name of the German protectorate. Parallel international forms include Norwegian Nynorsk Togo, Danish Togo, Swedish Togo, German Togo and French Togo.
