Where this word comes from
Borrowed from Danish Torben, a spelling variant of Danish Thorben. The latter is a younger form of Old Danish Thorbern, a variant of Thorbiorn, from Old Norse Þórbiǫrn, composed of Þórr (“Thor”) + bjǫrn (“bear”), literally “Thor-bear”. The first element ultimately goes back through Proto-Germanic *Þunraz (“Thor, god of thunder”) and *þunraz (“thunder”) to Proto-Indo-European *(s)tenh₂- (“to thunder”). The second element continues Proto-Germanic *bernuz (“bear”). Compare Norwegian Bokmål Torbjørn, Norwegian Nynorsk Torbjørn, Swedish Torbjörn, Icelandic Þorbjörn and Faroese Torbjørn (“male given names”).
