Where this word comes from
From the officially standardized Norwegian place-name element Trifan-, representing a local adaptation of Russian Трифон (Trifon), from Ancient Greek Τρύφων (Trúphōn, “delicate; one who lives softly or luxuriously”), ultimately from Ancient Greek τρυφάω (trupháō, “to live softly or luxuriously”), itself from Ancient Greek τρυφή (truphḗ, “softness, delicacy; luxury”), and the definite singular of nes (“headland, promontory”). The name refers to Saint Tryphon of Pechenga. Compare Kven Triffananniemi and Northern Sami Triffannjárga, the Kven and Northern Sami names of the same headland, respectively.
