Internationalism, based on East Slavic forms such as Ukrainian Украї́на (Ukrajína, “Ukraine”) and Russian Украи́на (Ukraína, “Ukraine”), both ultimately from Old East Slavic оукраина (ukraina, “borderland; region”), from Proto-Slavic *ukràjina (“borderland”). The Proto-Slavic form was composed of *u- (“at, by”), *kràjь (“edge, border; region”) and *-ina (“denominal noun-forming suffix”). The first element continues *u (“at, near”), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *au, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ew (“away from”). The second element is of disputed origin: it may derive from *krojiti (“to cut”), ultimately from *krey- (“to cut, separate”), or directly from *kroh₁y-, the full grade of *kreh₁y- (“to sieve, separate”). The suffix derives from Proto-Balto-Slavic *-īˀnāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *-iHneh₂. The historical name is most commonly interpreted as “borderland” or “marches”, though another interpretation is “region, country; the land around a centre”.
