Meaning & usage

name/²ʉlː.ənˌsɑː.kər/[ˈʉ̂lː.ənˌsɑː.kəɾ]
  1. a municipality of Akershus, Norway, on Romerike, with Jessheim as its administrative centre

Where this word comes from

Inherited from Old Norse Ullinshof (“Ullin's temple”), an old name for the church site and parish. The first element is the genitive of Ullinn, an old divine name traditionally identified with or regarded as a variant of Ullr (“Ull”). The second element is hof (“temple, pagan sanctuary”). From the early sixteenth century, the second element hof (“temple, pagan sanctuary”) was replaced by -aker (“field, cultivated land”), the form preserved in the place name, while the old genitival first element was retained, producing the modern name Ullensaker. The replacement may have been connected with the relocation of the rectory and church site. The name originally denoted the parish and was later transferred to the municipality established in 1837. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk Ullensaker (“municipality”).
