Where this word comes from
Internationalism, based on Latin Venus (“Venus, the Roman goddess; the planet Venus”), from the common noun Latin venus (“loveliness, beauty, charm”), from Proto-Indo-European *wénh₁-os (“loveliness”), from the root *wenh₁- (“to wish, love”). The astronomical sense is transferred from the name of the Roman goddess. The use as a female given name is likewise ultimately based on the mythological name. The underlying Latin noun is cognate with Sanskrit वनस् (vanas, “loveliness; desire”). Compare also Old Norse vinr (“friend; loved one”) and Norwegian Bokmål venn (“friend”), which derive from the same Proto-Indo-European root. Parallel international forms include Danish Venus, Swedish Venus, German Venus, Dutch Venus, Icelandic Venus, French Vénus and English Venus.
