Origin uncertain. Probably cognate with Swedish Swedish ag (“sedge, especially great fen-sedge”). The plant name has been connected with an Indo-European root meaning “sharp, pointed”, perhaps in reference to the sharply toothed leaves of great fen-sedge, but this connection is uncertain. If the proposed root connection is correct, compare Latin acus (“needle, point”) and ācer (“sharp”), as well as Norwegian agg (“edge; resentment”) and abbor (“perch”), which have also been connected with the same root.
