From dialectal Norwegian, from Old Norse bǫllr, from Proto-Germanic *balluz. Displaced Danish bold, which was excluded from the standard already in 1907. The establishment of the Norwegian form may have been facilitated by the fact that Danish also has bal c (“billiard ball”), a borrowing from French balle f.
