Derived from Latin biblia (“the Bible; books”), originally a neuter plural and in Medieval Latin reanalysed as a feminine singular, from Ancient Greek βιβλία (biblía, “books”), the plural of βιβλίον (biblíon, “small book, scroll”), a diminutive of βύβλος (búblos, “papyrus; papyrus roll, book”). The latter is probably connected with Βύβλος (Búblos, “Byblos”), the Greek name of the Phoenician port of Gebal, an important point of export for papyrus to the Greek world.
