Where this word comes from
Inherited from Danish blegne with native Norwegian -k-, from Old Norse blikna. By surface analysis, blek (“pale”) + -ne. Traditionally pronounced /blæɪ̯nə/ in Dano-Norwegian, as still in regne, tegne etc. However, the form with a velar obstruent established itself by analogy with the underlying adjective, which did not have the same pronunciation in Norway, although it does in Denmark, cf. bleg [b̥lɑj]. (The diphthong in the forms bleik, bleikne is of different origin.)
