The latter is generally derived from Old French espringaller (“to dance”), probably from a Germanic frequentative verb related to Middle Dutch springen (“to jump, spring”). Ultimately from Frankish *springan (“to jump”), from Proto-West Germanic *springan (“to spring, jump”), from Proto-Germanic *springaną (“to jump; burst”), from Proto-Indo-European *sprenǵʰ- (“to move energetically, hurry, spring”). Parallel borrowings from French include Danish espingol, Swedish espignol and Romanian espingolă. More distantly related through Old French espringale are English springald, Italian spingarda and Portuguese espingarda.
