Where this word comes from
Uncertain. Probably from or remodelled after dialectal fu (“buttocks”), inherited from Old Norse fuð (“vulva, vagina”), under the influence of Middle Low German vut (“vulva”). The Old Norse and Middle Low German forms continue Proto-Germanic *fuþiz (“vagina”), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *pewt-. A less likely proposal derives the word from Old Norse fit (“wet meadow, waterside grassland”). Compare Norwegian Nynorsk fitte, Swedish fitta, Danish fisse, Icelandic fuð (“vulva”), Scots fud (“vulva”), German Fotze (“cunt, vulva”) and Dutch vot (“arse”).
