Where this word comes from
From flat (“flat; thin and broad”) + brød (“bread”), literally “flat bread”, referring to the bread's thin, sheet-like form. The first element continues Old Norse flatr (“flat”). The second element, brød, is the Danish-form word from Old Danish brøth (“bread”), corresponding to Old Norse brauð (“bread”) and dialectal Norwegian brau (“bread”). First attested in 1519 in the spelling fladtbrød, in an account book from Bergenhus Fortress, recording fourteen barrels of flatbrød received from Sunnhordland. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk flatbrød, Danish fladbrød, Swedish flatbröd and Icelandic flatbrauð (“flatbread”).
