Where this word comes from

Inherited from Middle Norwegian harfr (“harrow”). The formally corresponding Old Norse harfr is attested as a byname; compare the ordinary Old Norse common noun herfi (“harrow”). Kroonen reconstructs Proto-Germanic *harbō- behind Bokmål harv and Nynorsk horv, alongside a variant *harbja- behind Icelandic herfi (“harrow”). These are probably related to Proto-Germanic *harbistaz (“autumn, harvest season”) and an inferred verb *harbijaną (“to pluck”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *kerp- (“to pluck, pick; reap, harvest”). The deeper connection is not entirely certain. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk harv and horv, Danish harve, Swedish harv, and Icelandic herfi (“harrow”). English harrow may also be related or borrowed from the Scandinavian word.
