Where this word comes from

Inherited from Old Norse hertogi (“commander of troops; duke”), likely itself borrowed from Middle Low German hertoch (“duke”), from Old Saxon heritogo (“army leader”), from Proto-West Germanic *harjatogō (“army leader, commander”), a compound of *hari (“army”) + *togō (“leader”), literally “army leader”. The second element is cognate with Latin dux (“leader, commander”), ultimately the source of English duke. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk hertug, Danish hertug, Swedish hertig, Icelandic hertogi, Faroese hertogi, Dutch hertog and German Herzog (“duke”).
