Where this word comes from

Borrowed from Greenlandic inuit (“people”), the plural of inuk (“person”), from Proto-Inuit *inuɣ (“person”), from Proto-Eskimo *iŋuɣ (“human being”). In Norwegian, the borrowed plural form was reinterpreted as a singular count noun. The Norwegian spelling with final -tt probably arose by analogy with -itt (“inhabitant- or member-forming suffix”), as in israelitt (“Israelite”), semitt (“Semite”) and arendalitt (“person from Arendal”). Compare the parallel borrowings Norwegian Nynorsk inuitt, Danish inuit, Swedish inuit, German Inuit and English Inuit.
