Where this word comes from
Borrowed from French jujube (“jujube”), ultimately from Vulgar Latin *zizūpus (“jujube”), probably transmitted through Old Occitan or Occitan, although no corresponding Occitan form of the jujube type is attested. Compare Latin zīzyphus (“jujube tree”) for the tree sense and zīzyphum (“jujube fruit”), alongside zizufum, zizuphum and zizuphon, for the fruit sense. The Latin forms are borrowed from Ancient Greek ζίζυφον (zízuphon, “jujube tree”), of uncertain origin. Compare English jujube, German Jujube, Czech jujuba, Polish jujuba, Portuguese jujuba, Romanian jujubă and Russian ююба (jujuba, “jujube”), related forms belonging to the same Latin–Romance word family.
