Inherited from Old Norse kapellánn (“chaplain”), from Medieval Latin cappellānus (“chaplain”), from Late Latin cappella (“chapel; little cloak”), a diminutive of Latin cappa (“cloak, cape”). The term originally referred to a cleric serving the sanctuary in which the cloak of Saint Martin of Tours was preserved.
