Where this word comes from

Borrowed from English lunch (“midday meal”). In its meal sense, the English word is probably a shortening of luncheon (“light midday meal”); its deeper origin is uncertain. English lunch originally referred to a piece or hunk of food before developing its modern meal sense. The English spelling lunch is attested in Norwegian at least by 1891. The Norwegianized spelling lunsj was probably fixed by the 1917 orthographic reform and was the only form listed in a 1919 Riksmål wordlist. It is the only spelling accepted in the current official Bokmål norm.
