Where this word comes from

Borrowed from Danish lytte (“to listen”), originally a Jutlandic dialect form. The Danish word is probably from a Middle Low German or German dialectal form; compare Middle Low German lûschen (“to listen, lurk”), dialectal German laus(s)en and lus(s)en (“to lurk, listen”), and German lauschen (“to listen, eavesdrop”). The form of the Danish verb was subsequently influenced by older Danish lydte and lydt, respectively the simple past and past participle of lyde (“to obey; listen to”).
