Inherited from Old Norse miðdagr (“midday, noon”), from Proto-Germanic *midjadagaz (“noon”), from *midjaz (“middle”) + *dagaz (“day”), literally “middle day” or “middle of the day”. The original sense was the middle of the day, especially noon. The meal sense developed because the day's main meal was traditionally eaten around this time. Although the meal gradually moved to later in the afternoon or evening, especially as working patterns changed, the old name remained. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk middag, Danish middag and Swedish middag (“midday; dinner”), Faroese middagur and Icelandic miðdegi (“midday, noon”), as well as English midday, Dutch middag and German Mittag (“midday, noon”).
