Where this word comes from

Inherited from Danish mod with native Norwegian -t, from Old Norse móðr, from Proto-Germanic *mōdaz. The semantic development was influenced by cognate Middle Low German môt, Modern German Mut. These may also explain the unexpected -t, though it is more probably due to sporadic final devoicing; cf. kot (“small fry”) vs. Icelandic kóð. The regular -d remains in modig. (It is also found in a few literary compounds, which have retained the Danish form.)
