Where this word comes from

Borrowed from German Nazist (“Nazi”), a shortened form of Nationalsozialist (“National Socialist”); compare German Nazi (“Nazi”) and the agent-noun suffix -ist (“adherent or agent suffix”). German Nazi is itself a colloquial clipping of Nationalsozialist, formed after Sozi (“socialist; Social Democrat”). The full form Nationalsozialist is composed of national (“national”) and Sozialist (“socialist”). Doublet of nazi (“Nazi”). First attested in 1933. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk nazist, Danish nazist, Swedish nazist, German Nazist, Dutch nazist, Romanian nazist, French naziste and Italian nazista (“Nazi”).
