Borrowed from German Pilsner (“pilsner”), shortened from German Pilsner Bier (“Pilsen beer”). The German word is derived from Pilsen, the German name of Plzeň, the city in Bohemia where the beer style originated. The first beer of this type was brewed there by the Bavarian brewer Josef Groll on 5 October 1842 and first served on 11 November 1842. The term was in use in Norwegian brewing by 1886, when Ringnes introduced its first pilsner. The formerly standard spelling pilsener more closely reflects German Pilsener, an alternative form of Pilsner.
