Borrowed from Greenlandic pingu (“tussock, small hill, hillock”), from Proto-Inuit *piŋu (“mound, dune, hillock, swelling”), ultimately from Proto-Eskimo *pǝŋu (“hill, swelling”). Cognate with Inuktitut pingu (“hummock, small hill”) and Yup'ik penguq (“hill, mound”). The term was adopted internationally as a technical term for an ice-cored permafrost mound during the 20th century.
