Partially derived from Middle Low German sacken, sik (“to sink, to sag”), but potentially also from an older Norse analog; see cognates: Danish sakke (“to lag behind”), Swedish sacka (“to lag”), Faroese søkka (“to descend”), Icelandic sakka (“to sink”); also Dutch zakken (“to fall, drop, sink”). The word may have several roots intermixing. Via cognates, the base root is the same as Norwegian Bokmål søkke (“to sink”); compare Swedish sank (“marsh”), from the imperfect singular of sjunka (“to sink”), sänka (causitive). This can further be connected to dialectal sinka, from Old Norse seinka (“to delay, slow down, hamper”), to seinn (“late”). Another potential root is sakk (“sack”), as found in Swedish säcka ihop (“to 'bag'-in on oneself/itself”).
