Where this word comes from
Borrowed from Middle Low German schonrogge (“white, light rye”), also schonerogge, literally “beautiful (light, white) rye”, from schōne (“beautiful; fair, light”) and rogge (“rye”). First attested in 1793 in Norwegian customs records, in a Vardø import list recording 700 pounds of “Brød, Skonrok” imported from Denmark. Compare Old Danish skonroggen, Old Swedish skanroggä and Icelandic skonrok (“large rusk, biscuit”).
