Where this word comes from

Borrowed from Middle Low German slūt (“end, conclusion”), a deverbal noun formed from slūten (“to close, shut; conclude”), from Old Saxon slūtan (“to close, lock”), from Proto-West Germanic *sleutan (“to bolt, lock”), from Proto-Germanic *sleutaną (“to bolt, lock; shut, close”). The further origin is uncertain. The Germanic verb has tentatively been connected with a metathesized s-mobile form of *kleh₂w- (“hook, peg, latch”), potentially relating it to Latin claudō (“to close”), but this connection is disputed. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk slutt, Swedish slut and Danish slut, as well as Dutch slot (“lock; ending, conclusion”) and German Schluss (“end, conclusion”).
