Where this word comes from
From older Dano-Norwegian sorenskriver (“sworn scribe”), originally soren (“sworn”) + skriver (“scribe, writer”), literally “sworn scribe”. The first element is an older Danish form corresponding to svoren (“sworn”), the past participle of sverge (“to swear”). The term originally referred to an edsvoren (“sworn”) court scribe; the Norwegian office was established by royal letter in 1591. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk sorenskrivar and Faroese sorinskrivari (“sorenskriver”).
