Meaning & usage

noun/spɑː/[spɑː]
  1. a thin soup, especially one made with meat or meat broth

    dialectal · neuter · uncountable
Where this word comes from

Inherited from Old Norse spað (“thin soup made from meat or fish”). According to a traditional etymology, the Old Norse noun ultimately belongs to the Proto-Indo-European root *speh₁- (“to stretch, spread out”), with the proposed semantic development “stretched out” → “thin”. First attested in 1852 in Dano-Norwegian, under the pronunciation-based spelling spa, in Nicolai Ramm Østgaard’s En Fjeldbygd. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk spa (“thin soup”), Old Swedish spadh, Swedish spad (“broth, cooking liquid”), Danish spad (“broth, thin meat soup”) and Icelandic spað (“finely chopped meat”).
