Ultimately of uncertain origin. Norwegian dialectal vingla (“to tumble about, wander to and fro”) is recorded by Ivar Aasen, first attested in 1850. Probably related to svinge (“to swing, sway”). Scandinavian etymological sources alternatively connect the word family with an older root denoting bending or curving, also represented in words related to vanke (“to wander”) and vinkel (“angle”). Compare Norwegian Nynorsk vingle and vingla, dialectal Danish vingle and hvingle, Swedish vingla, Icelandic vingla and Faroese vingla (“to wobble, stagger”).
