Meaning & usage

name/ɑˈkoːi̯/
  1. a village in West Betuwe, Gelderland, Netherlands

    neuter
Where this word comes from

First attested as in den lande van accoy in 1305. Compound of an unclear first element of non-Germanic origin and ooi (“land next to water”). The first element might be derived from Akko (“Acre”) as a reference to the Crusades. The interpretation of the first element as Middle Dutch Akke (a personal name) is incorrect.
